During the 2009-2010 school year, CISC partnered
with 170 schools and served an additional 128 non-partner schools.
Together with our network of more than 150 service providers, CISC
connected more than 1,300 programs and services to more than 60,000
students — at no cost to students or schools.
During the 2010-2011 school year, we will continue to connect more than 60,000 students with services that address their social, emotional and health needs. CISC
has an impressive long-term goal of serving 100,000 students annually
by 2015.
Many Chicago public school children need help.
More than 85 percent of Chicago public school students come from low-income
homes and most live in underserved communities. Many lack access to
the social, emotional, health and enrichment supports that are critical
to academic success. Parents turn to schools as a community hub where
these needs can be met, but schools are often under-resourced and
stretched just to address academics.
Communites In Schools of Chicago (CISC)
addresses the gap between students’ needs and schools’
ability to respond to these needs. We connect students with free
social, emotional, health and enrichment programs and provide schools
and the community organizations providing services with strategic
and tactical expertise in effective program coordination. CISC partners
with a broad range of service providers to connect students with
programs and services that include:
- Academic and arts enrichment;
- Alcohol and substance abuse education;
- Anger management and conflict resolution;
- Counseling;
- Faculty and family support;
- Health education and direct health services;
- HIV/AIDS prevention education;
- Nutrition and physical education; and
- Violence prevention education.
