CIS National
Communities In Schools of Chicago (CISC) is an affiliate of Communities In Schools (CIS), the nation’s largest drop-out prevention organization and the fifth largest organization serving youth. The CIS national office was established in 1977 to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. Today there are 200 CIS affiliates in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Each affiliate functions as an independent nonprofit with a separate Board of Directors and independent funding.

Driving Change
Nationally, CIS is the leader on school-based, integrated student support services. CIS identifies existing community resources and fosters partnerships between service providers and schools that benefit students and families. Some affiliates accomplish this by case managing individual students while other affiliates, like CISC, work with the whole school community.

CISC is driven by the philosophy that every child has the right to a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and a healthy future, a marketable skill to use upon graduation and a chance to give back to peers and community.

In recent years, the work of the CIS national office has moved increasingly into the public policy arena. CIS testifies regularly on Capitol Hill, works with government agencies, and collaborates with other national organizations.

CIS by the Numbers
- 80 to 90 percent of students tracked by CIS stay in school
- More than 2 million students annually have access to CIS-connected services
- Each year, CIS affiliates deliver resources to more than 3,400 schools across the country
- CIS works with 16,000 community partners nationwide

In 2007, Elaine Wynn, Director of Wynn Resorts, was named Board Chairman of Communities In Schools.
